Mike Sarian: A Patriotic Stand on the Washington Agreement

The preliminary signing of the Washington agreement has sparked wide debate, with many still unsure how its provisions will be implemented. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev continues to boast about his “victory” and promises to further strengthen his army.

Against this backdrop, prominent Armenian-American philanthropist Mike Sarian shared his view. Acknowledging the risks, he nonetheless welcomed the development as a step toward peace.

Sarian, long known for his financial support to Armenia’s state institutions—under both Serzh Sargsyan and Nikol Pashinyan—as well as to the Armenian Apostolic Church and the Armenian Revolutionary Federation, stressed that while he has often criticized Pashinyan’s government, this move deserves support.

Speaking with the pragmatism of a businessman, Sarian noted that the people of Armenia are firmly against war, and he stands with them in backing the agreement. In his view, signing under the American flag provides far greater security than remaining dependent on Moscow—a power that today is unable to derail the deal.

Sarian’s stance is both pragmatic and patriotic, and many hope other benefactors, both national and international, will follow his example.
