Behind the productive work of the Fresno Medical Mission lies a clear vision articulated by Berje Apkarian, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Armenia in Fresno: to place professional expertise and human resources at the service not only of medical care, but also of Armenia and the Diaspora through sustained and practical support. Guided by this vision, the mission continues to expand the scope of its activities beyond medicine to include education, professional training, and development initiatives.
The Fresno Medical Mission has long been known for its productive activities. Through regular missions, it has consistently provided a wide range of assistance to Armenian charitable, medical, and educational institutions in Lebanon.
In a recent discussion, Apkarian explained that although this year’s mission to Lebanon had been postponed, it would certainly take place and continue. He emphasized that the mission remains committed to supporting the Armenian community in Lebanon, despite the difficult security, political, economic, and social conditions facing the country.
The mission’s programme also includes the Armenian community in Syria and the Republic of Armenia, where significant investments have recently been made, particularly in the medical field, with the aim of strengthening and developing Armenia’s healthcare sector.
The mission’s upcoming visit to Armenia, scheduled for September 18 to October 4, will focus on four main areas:
Professor Charbel Rizk, a well-known member of the medical staff of the American University of Beirut Medical Center, will also join the programme in Armenia and contribute his expertise, particularly in the field of intensive care.
The breadth of this programme reflects Perch Abkarian’s broader vision: to transform a medical mission into a platform for practical Armenia–Diaspora cooperation, bringing together professional expertise, human resources, training, investment, and long-term development.
Abkarian has also emphasized that the mission’s multifaceted activities enjoy the support and blessing of His Holiness Catholicos Aram I of the Holy See of Cilicia.
“We are aware that the Armenian community in Lebanon is facing serious security, political, economic, and social challenges, and our mission is to stand in solidarity with this vital Diaspora community to the best of our ability,” Apkarian stated.
